On the 23 rd May 2008, ACRES will be holding a Gala Dinner at the prestigious Orchid Country Club (from 7pm till late) to celebrate our 7th anniversary as the voice for the animals, raise funds and awareness for our wildlife protection programmes, as well as to reward our patrons for their generous support. This year's event, aptly titled "Voices of the Wild", will prove to be an even glitzier affair with great entertainment such as a special fashion show featuring Miss Singapore Universe 2007, Jessica Tan, wacky show-host, Daryl Epimaco, crazy games, great musical acts, a delectable 9 course vegetarian spread plus free flow wine all night long. Voices of the Wild aims to attract over 350 people, ranging from corporate representatives to individuals and families. Money raised on the night will go towards the establishment of the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) - Singapore’s first centre dedicated to rescuing animals from the illegal wildlife trade and giving them a second chance at life. I sometimes call my cat "Mr Ocean" just to make him feel big/important coz' I feel like I need to improve his self esteem even though Ocean never look like he needs it. 2. Ever since young I try to twitch my nose just like Samantha in "Bewithced" I'm still trying now. 3. I would say a word or phrase like "Guantanamo Bay Cuba" or "Kimchi? No kimchi" and anything that's memorable (at least to me) that I've seen on TV during quiet moments like a quiet drive home or during a quiet dinner. This never fails to make my hubby laugh. My hubby once wished that I would say "You had me at hello" like in the movie "Jerry Macguire" during one of my moments but somehow those phrase just never pop into my head. 4. I like to hide junk food around the house but will soon forget where I hid them. But I love the surprise of finding them later. 5. I'm very bad with directions (I don't even know how to look at the street directory properly) but I love to give my hubby directions when we get lost. This always frustrate him like hell, of course. 6. I like to create happy endings in my dreams. When I feel like my dream is going to end badly, I try my best to steer the ending to my satisfaction. Sometimes it works and I wake up happy and refreshed but sometimes it just doesn't work :( |  | World Animal Day 2007

I REFER to the article, 'More dogs being abandoned or given up' (ST, Sept 27). I find it unconscionable, in this day and age, that someone can abandon a family pet, or any animal, simply because it has become a financial or physical burden to care for it. My heart aches for the animals that are featured in the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Action for Singapore Dogs' adoption galleries. Those animals once gave their undivided devotion to their adopted families, only to have that devotion repaid through abandonment. My mind is inadvertently drawn to my Golden Retriever and the look of pure delight every time he sees me and my wife. All he desires is that we spend time playing fetch with him; that we take the time to give him tummy rubs; that we take the time to hold him and tell him that we love him. We cannot imagine life without our beloved Jestie. His is an unconditional love; a love that is not motivated by greed, or by guile, or by a desire to obtain an advantage. He loves us simply because we are his family, his 'pack'. Children can learn a lot about love by watching how a dog acts with his family. A child can learn a lot about responsibility by taking care of a family pet. If we can discard such undivided and unwavering love for the sake of convenience, just what kind of message and what kind of education are we providing for the next generation? As the tagline on SPCA posters says, 'To you he's just a pet, but to him, you're everything'. As a civilised society, we must strive to take care of our animals. Gandhi once said: 'The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.' Going by that statement, there is much to be desired in terms of our moral progress.
